TriActive also prevents illegal software use and copying within Cookson Electronics. The inventory tool reports on software installed on the company's machines, such as how many Visio apps are running on user workstations.

"We can get a report that says there are 1,000 copies of Visio out there, even though we only bought 800," DeLuca says. "We can then remove Visio from the [offending] PCs." Cookson recently used TriActive's software-distribution feature to deploy Lotus Sametime instant-messaging software companywide.

The TriActive service runs over Cookson Electronics' WAN, which is mostly frame relay--soon to be MPLS (Multiprotocol Layer Switching)/frame relay--and is deployed at all 100 of the manufacturer's sites around the globe except for China. The company is awaiting a new Chinese user interface for TriActive that supports the double-byte character sets of the Chinese language.
