Smartphone Sales Surged In First Quarter: Page 2 of 2

While unit sales remain small, smartphone sales increased by almost 86 percent in the last year, according to a study released Thursday by IDC.

By contrast, once-troubled Motorola showed strong growth, increasing its market share almost 3 percent in the first quarter alone. It showed 51.5 percent growth compared to the same quarter a year ago and ended the quarter in second place behind Nokia with a 16.6 percent market share. Samsung was in third place with a 13.1 percent market share.
