While security concerns don’t always get the attention they deserve in discussions about the cloud and virtual infrastructures, this week’s VMworld 2011 conference saw an increased interest in security solutions. Joining this trend was security vendor Trend Micro, which announced Deep Security 8, a product that adds increased capabilities for monitoring and securing virtual environments.
One Deep Security 8's main features is its support for agentless integrity monitoring designed to be used in VMware vSphere 5 systems. This enables file integrity checking and allows for increased protection against data loss in virtual deployments. Other agentless virtual security features available in Deep Security 8 include malware protection and intrusion prevention capabilities.
Harish Agastya, director of product marketing at Trend Micro, says, "Most enterprises struggle with isolated point security solutions that are operationally complex to manage, and this is even more so in virtual environments. Deep Security 8 provides agentless anti-malware
intrusion prevention and now integrates monitoring in one single virtual appliance. That means extra server security with zero added footprint or operational overhead."
Along with the VM capabilities, Deep Security 8 is a full server security suite with all of the features one would expect from such a system, including anti-malware protection, firewall capabilities, intrusion prevention, Web application protection, integrity monitoring and log inspection.
Another significant aspect of Deep Security 8 is related to increased integration with Trend Micro’s SecureCloud 2, which provides encryption and data protection for cloud deployments. With this integration, it is possible for Deep Security to check the security profile of a system accessing encrypted content on SecureCloud and prevent access if the accessing system is lacking in security protections or has been infected by malware.
Pricing for Deep Security 8 startes at $1,000 per server, with volume discounts available. Deep Security 8 is expected to ship by the end of
the year.
