Mainframes Power BMC Revenue

Mainframe products played a big role in BMC Software's second-quarter earnings for its fiscal year 2005, which ended Sept. 30.

The Houston-based software vendor earned $35.2 million, or 16 cents a share, on revenue of $355 million for the quarter. Earnings for the same quarter a year ago came in at $22.2 million, or 10 cents per share, on revenue of $333 million.

Driving the company's overall income was stellar performance from its DM-Mainframe and Mainframe Management business units which, when compared with the first quarter of fiscal 2005, experienced growth of 185 percent and 152 percent, respectively, in license bookings. They were the only BMC business units to experience triple-digit growth during the second quarter, according to BMC.

For the second quarter, BMC's Patrol business unit grew 38 percent compared with the first quarter of fiscal 2005.

"We did a good job of executing this quarter as evidenced by our strong revenue, earnings per share and license bookings results. License bookings had strong sequential growth across all our major product lines and across all major geographies. We also continued to show solid expense management and demonstrated significant improvement in our operating margins as we more than doubled our operating margins compared to the same quarter a year ago," said Bob Beauchamp, BMC president and CEO, in a statement.
