Reading, Writing And Linux

Primary school pupils in 16 Mexican states will soon be using Linux-based IBM desktop PCs. The 1,000 ThinkCentre desktop PCs were recently donated to the schools by Omnilife, a Mexican retail business. IBM Global Services is providing support services.

By using open-source software such as Linux, Ominlife is hoping to provide the schools with reduced operating and maintenance costs, as well as an increased use of new applications.

"Our hope is to allow students of all ages to use and become familiar with open technology," said Jorge Vergara, director, Omnilife, "so that they can grow with it and take advantage of it in the future."
