DISA Computing Services Consolidates Servers

The Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) Center for Computing Services has successfully completed the first phase of the Defense Finance and Accounting System (DFAS) server consolidation project.

The first phase of the project included the consolidation of 41 DFAS server applications located at 10 sites into three Systems Management Centers. According to DISA CCS, which is responsible for managing more than 2,000 servers worldwide, that initial portion of the project was completed early and under-budget. Phase two, expected to be implemented in Spring 2005, will consolidate the remaining DFAS server applications and will fully implement the infrastructure needed to support the DFAS business continuity plan.

The consolidation project goals include improving operational efficiency, lowering processing costs, reducing labor requirements and the number of computing services locations. In addition, the consolidation effort is aimed at providing better continuity of operations to include improved disaster recovery and backup services for server operations.
