Veritas Pitches New Backup Software to SMBs

Veritas introduced new backup and recovery software aimed at small- and mid-sized businesses, remote offices, and corporate workgroups.
NetBackup 5.0 Server -- formerly tagged with the name NetBackup Business Server -- is a scalable solution that allows users to migrate to Veritas' larger-sized NetBackup Enterprise server as needs grow, the company said.

The new software provides limitless client protection and tape storage support, and offers enterprise-style features such as disk staging, synthetic backup, and automated data recovery to smaller-sized shops. It also integrates technology from Veritas' Volume Replicator, allowing for automatic replication of stored data to a remote site or server for faster recovery.

NetBackup 5.0 Server works with Unix, Windows, Linux, and NetWare storage environments. Prices start at $2,000; existing users of NetBackup Business Server can migrate to the new software for free.
