Sun Names New EVP Of Software

Sun Microsystems has announced that John Loiacono, 43, will become the company's new executive vice president of software. Loiacono fills the void created when Jonathan Schwartz was promoted to the position of president and Chief Operating Officer. Loiacono will lead the division responsible for delivering on Sun's network computing strategy.

In a statement, Loiacono noted that under his predessor's leadership, "Sun's disruptive actions are shattering conventional wisdom within the software industry...I look forward to building upon our disruptive success..."

Prior to his new role, Loiacono was senior vice president of Sun's operating platforms group and was responsible for the strategic direction of the Solaris and Linux platforms, as well as the Java Enterprise System. He played a key role in delivering the Solaris OS on platforms including the Sun SPARC, AMD Opteron and Intel/Xeon processors. He has been with the company since 1987.
