How many calls for password resets did your helpdesk field last month? If your helpdesk is like most, 20 percent to 50 percent of all its calls--at an average of $25 each--were for password resets. Add on the users who need new rights to particular resources and the organization's desire to offer customized access to its best customers and partners, and you're mired in the time-consuming and costly process of identity and access management (IAM).

A couple of years ago, you had to buy products from multiple vendors to solve the problems-- and realize the benefits--of identity management and Web access control. But integration is the name of the game today, with vendors combining the two technologies in a single package.

Then there's the buzzphrase du jour, federated identity management, which lets organizations manage identities and provide secure, controlled access to external constituents. FIM is still in its early stages, with standards under construction. First-generation FIM technology has been integrated into many IAM packages, but FIM has a way to go before it reaches maturity.
