A pair of fascinating papers by NMS' Brough Turner and Andrea Basso, recently posted on their site, detail some of the benefits new 3G standards bring to the table, detail some of the obstacles to full implementation by carriers, and suggest solutions. PERFORMANCE TECHNOLOGIES

Performance Technologies was the originator of CompactPCI, and key author of the PICMG 2.16 specification. And they have a range of products in this space - from straight CPCI to advanced packet-backplane managed systems - that's hard to beat for quality and innovation.

PT's products - particularly their top-of-the-line IPnexus product family - exemplify the benefits of the radical move towards standards in the HD/HA platform space. IPnexus products are CPCI - you can install third-party CPCI components, and they'll work, hot-swap, etc. Shelf management is PICMG 2.9 IPMI (Intelligent Platform Management Interface) compatible, so compliant cards from multiple vendors can be monitored, powered up and down and otherwise kept healthy by the platform and its firmware and software.

The platform itself - significantly redundant at the host level in compliance with PICMG's Redundant Host specification, as well as at the fabric and individual node levels (depending on configuration), takes care of the details.
