The newest addition to the HP 10500 campus core switch family is the 10512, available before the month is out, that accepts any combination of new 48-port 10GbE or 4-port 40GbE line cards, says Nielsen. The company claims that the 10512 delivers 75% lower latency, 526% higher 10GbE density and 1,090% higher throughput than a Catalyst 6513E core switch from networking industry leader -- and HP rival -- Cisco Systems.
Monday at Interop Huawei introduced the CloudEngine 12800, which will deliver switching capacity of up to 48 Tbits per second (Tbps), which Huawei claims is three times the industry average for such switches, and bandwidth of 2 Tbps, which it claims is twice the industry average. The 12800 switch, as well as the 5800 and 6800 top-of-rack (ToR) switches, support the full range of Ethernet connectivity speeds: 100 Gbit Ethernet (GbE), 40GbE, 10GbE and 1GbE.
Another Interop exhibitor, Dell, was planning to introduce its first 40-GbE-enabled blade server switch. The Dell Force10 MXL 10/40GbE blade switch, the latest member of the Dell PowerEdge M1000e blade family, features what the company calls "Ethernet stacking technology," which enables six switching modules within one enclosure or multiple enclosures to be managed as one logical device. The blade switch also speeds up east-west switching--in which data flows from one virtual machine to another, within a physical server or between them--by avoiding the path in which data moves out of the server, through a ToR switch, to get to another server.
