Fujitsu Matches Hitachi In 300GB Drive War

Less than two weeks after rival Hitachi unveiled a monster 300GB hard drive for enterprises, Fujitsu has fired off a retort by introducing its own line of hard drives that max out at the magic 300GB number.

Fujitsu's new MAT family, which should show on the market in the second quarter, have a rotation speed of 10,000 rpm (revolutions per minute) and will be available in 73GB, 147GB, and 300GB models.

Hitachi's competing Ultrastar 10K300 also boasts speeds of 10,000 rpm, and comes in configurations with capacities of 36GB, 73GB, 146GB, and 300GB.

Fujitsu's four-platter drives also include an 8MB buffer, operate at extra-quiet sound levels, and promise a 25 percent improvement in internal data transfer rates over earlier generation hardware, claimed Fujitsu.
