Online Only: Renaming Workaround

The Domain rename procedure cannot be used until after the entire forest has been upgraded to Windows Server 2003 Domain controllers, and the forest is set to a "Windows Server 2003 Functional Level," a new forest level mode beyond even Window 2000's native mode. For most customers, transition to Windows Server 2003 Forest Functional Level will take several years to accomplish, which makes the Domain rename procedure irrelevant for the foreseeable future. In addition, the 70-page renaming procedure can only be described as intense. I have yet to find a veteran systems engineer who would be comfortable attempting this procedure on a production network. My best advice is to wait for Release 2 of the procedure.
