Tablets And Desktop Virtualization: Page 2 of 2

A thin client that can access a virtual desktop could be set up at the user's desk for when they are in the office. When they are mobile, secure remote access could be provided to that same virtual desktop when the user needed to access corporate applications or information in shorter bursts.

This provides an ideal compromise and could make desktop virtualization an easier pill for the mobile worker to swallow. Use the thin client while at their desk and use the tablet for the basics like email, calendaring and initial document creation when mobile, and use remote access to a virtualized desktop when they need more capabilities to run a corporate application.

The impact of tablets could be greater adoption of desktop virtualization, which will require better planning and capabilities within the data center. If this model leads to wide adoption of virtual desktops, then the impact on storage I/O and network I/O could be significant, but the overall cost and simplification of management would be welcome relief for IT Staff who are stretched too thin.
