Meantime, IT and other compliance-related costs are soaring. More than half the companies surveyed by PricewaterhouseCoopers late last year said their compliance spending will increase by an average of 23 percent during the next 12 to 24 months. Yet 44 percent of those companies said they don't have a clear view of their total compliance spending, and more than half don't understand the value they're getting.
For governance measures to succeed, they must force companies to think differently about their businesses, not just layer on more costs and restrictions for the sake of appearances.
