Cloud Storage Infrastructure's Next Wave: Page 2 of 2

Cloud infrastructures are the back-end to the cloud. They are what the providers of the customer facing cloud service will eventually host their applications or services on, store their data on and they are what local applications like backup and archive software will augment as an additional tier of storage.

Which model will be more effective? The current cloud Infrastructure companies or the next wave of infrastructure companies? There will be success on both sides. The companies that write their own software have the advantage of granular control over the infrastructure. The next wave will have to be more careful in whom they choose to arm the back-end with but they will not have the added development costs that the legacy companies will.

As always the successful companies will simply execute on their strengths better than the guys that are not as successful. Because of the next wave of cloud infrastructure providers we will see a massive build up in the number of companies participating in that end of the cloud market. This will last for at least five years or so, then at that point we could see a significant consolidation of these infrastructure providers.
The reasons behind this and what it will take to survive will be the focus of my next entry.
