IBM's Big Fat File System: Page 2 of 2

The limitations of Storage Tank mirror those of IBM's SAN Volume Controller block-level virtualization appliance, which was able to support only IBM storage when it was first introduced this summer (see IBM Virtually in the Game).

IBM is slowly making progress, though: Next month, the company says it will make available a new version of SAN Volume Controller software that is supposed to support storage disk arrays from Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE: HPQ) and Hitachi Data Systems (HDS).

In addition, the software that runs the SAN Volume Controller is being integrated into Cisco Systems Inc.'s (Nasdaq: CSCO) MDS 9000 Fibre Channel switch, according to IBM.
