Experience for Sale: Page 2 of 2

My experiences with small, regional consulting shops were better, though you still must evaluate the talent you're buying. These companies live and die by customer satisfaction, so what they lack in name recognition they usually try to make up for by being flexible -- something the big guys typically do only for a price. I've had some of the little guys come back to me three or four months after the completion of a project just to see if there's anything more they could do, for free. You usually don't get that from a company that ships you talent by plane each time you do business.

So whether you're a buyer or seller of consulting services, they're a critical part of IT life. Your organization can't be expert in everything (despite what your team's resumes might say), so look to outsiders with care. If you don't think you got what you paid for, drop me a line. I'd be more than willing to discuss what may have gone wrong -- for a nominal hourly fee, of course.
